“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again,
and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.”
Have you ever had to give up something that you really didn’t want to let go of? When things mean so much to us, we often relinquish them reluctantly, sometimes begrudgingly. Yet, in this parable in Matthew 13, Jesus says the man went away in his joy and sold everything he had in order to buy this treasure-containing field.
What in the world would motivate someone to do such a thing? For this man, only one thing: the payoff far outweighed the cost. The cost may have been everything he owned, but he determined that the payoff was more valuable than any current treasure he possessed.
Jesus said this treasure is like the kingdom of heaven. Committing ourselves to Jesus and His kingdom ways is priceless. It’s also quite costly. In fact, following Jesus will cost us everything–all we have and are. Still, in joy, we can rest assured that regardless of what we have to exchange, the payoff far outweighs any cost!
What is your treasure that’s worth everything?
Are you willing to trust Jesus that what He offers you is much more valuable
than what you may need to let go of?
