“We love because He first loved us.”
I John 4:19
If you ever took part in Vacation Bible School, Sunday school, or had a family that remotely related to church, you most likely heard or sang, “Jesus loves me, this I know.” It’s the song with the next line, “for the Bible tells me so.”
Here’s the question: do you really believe that’s true? Do you really believe Jesus loves you, is for you, believes in you, dotes over you, smiles at every glance of you?
Or, sadly, do you along with many allow the lyrics to flow from your lips but never sink to your heart or make its way to your head? Do you relegate the song to something for little kids but not relevant to the “real,” grown-up world you live in? Do you think God is more concerned with you towing the line and measuring up than He is pulling you near and knowing your thoughts? If so, maybe it’s time to think about God and His love a little differently.
The Bible that “tells us so” is a cover to cover story of God’s love for us. While it guides and instructs us, the Bible is not primarily a rule book, a turn-or-burn book, or a better-get- busy-or-else book. The Bible is first and foremost God’s message, history lesson, and promise fulfilment of His ongoing love for all that He has created (including you!).
So, yes, Jesus does love you. He always has. That you have an inkling of what love is in the first place exists because God loved you first and planted a love understanding in your heart and mind. So, sing it loud, sing it proud. May your head and heart join your mouth as you sing and believe, “Jesus loves ME, this I know!”
Find some place and space to think about,
“How much do I really believe God loves me ‘just because’?” Talk to God about it.
Using a search engine, see how many times the word “love” is used in Scripture and where. What do your findings tell you about God’s love for you and this world?
